N64 to HDMI Setup & Troubleshooting
Use this guide to connect the RetroArcadeCrafts N64 to HDMI Converter Cable to a modern TV, monitor, or projector. The converter is compatible with Nintendo 64, Super NES (SNES), and Nintendo GameCube.
Before you begin
- N64 to HDMI Converter Cable
- Included USB power cable
- A display with an available HDMI input
- Your console, power supply, and a game cartridge or disc
Quick setup
- Turn off the console and display.
- Connect the converter's Nintendo AV plug firmly to the console's AV MULTI OUT port.
- Connect the HDMI end to an available HDMI port on the TV, monitor, or projector.
- Connect the included USB power cable to the converter, then connect it to a powered USB port or a standard 5V USB power adapter.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input you connected.
- Insert a game and turn on the console.
Important: The USB cable supplies power to the converter. The converter may not produce a picture or sound if USB power is not connected.
No signal or black screen
- Confirm that the console's power light is on and the game is inserted correctly.
- Confirm that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect the Nintendo AV plug, HDMI plug, and USB power cable.
- Try a different powered USB port or a standard 5V USB power adapter.
- Turn everything off, connect the converter completely, then turn on the display before turning on the console.
- Try another HDMI port on the display.
- If available, test with another HDMI display to isolate a compatibility issue.
- Clean and reseat the game cartridge. A console that does not start the game may also output a blank screen.
Picture problems
Picture is stretched or cropped
Open the display's picture settings and select 4:3, Original, Normal, or Fit. Classic Nintendo games were generally designed for a 4:3 picture.
Picture looks soft or pixelated
The converter sends the console's original standard-definition video to an HDMI display. Image quality varies by console, game, and the display's processing. Turn off heavy sharpening, motion smoothing, or noise-reduction settings if the image looks unnatural.
Picture flickers or drops out
Reconnect all plugs, use a stable USB power source, and try another HDMI port. If the issue continues, test another display to determine whether the problem is display compatibility or the console's video output.
Audio problems
- Confirm that the display is using audio from the selected HDMI input and is not muted.
- Reconnect the HDMI and USB power cables.
- Try another HDMI port or display.
- If a monitor has no built-in speakers, use the monitor's audio output or another HDMI audio solution.
Display compatibility
Most HDTVs, monitors, and projectors with HDMI input should work, but support for older standard-definition console signals varies. If one display shows no picture, test another HDMI display before concluding that the converter is faulty.
